Webheads of the world, unite. The latest Spider-Man: Brand New Day trailer has just arrived. Tickets are on sale today for Tom Holland’s fourth solo outing as the friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man. Director Destin Daniel Cretton has delivered a brand new teaser that nobody saw coming until right now. The world may have forgotten Peter Parker after No Way Home, but he certainly hasn’t forgotten them.
There is a whole lot going on in this action-packed new trailer. We get Spidey versus Scorpion, Hulk versus Spidey, and Spider-Man taking on the deadly Hand. In many ways, we also get Spidey versus Spidey, as Peter Parker goes through what has been called Spider-Puberty. He is changing in ways he cannot understand, developing organic webs and unsettling blacked-out spider eyes. And that is barely scratching the surface of what this trailer has to offer.
Zendaya’s MJ and Jacob Batalon’s Ned still have no memory of Peter, which remains genuinely heartbreaking to watch. Spidey saves MJ in a dramatic moment, yet she still has no idea who he is. Ned, meanwhile, has built an entire Spider Tracker to follow Queens’ favourite web-slinging Avenger. Peter is also still grieving his beloved Aunt May, who delivers poignant voice-over advice in the trailer. Sadie Sink continues to lurk in a hoodie, radiating serious Jean Grey energy as an invisible force causes chaos. A second mysterious hooded figure, dressed entirely in black, has now also appeared for Spider-Man to deal with. No wonder Peter has called on Frank Castle for back-up.
The official synopsis is suitably cryptic and tantalising. It reads: “It’s a Brand New Day for Peter Parker. Fighting crime full-time in a world that doesn’t remember him sparks a change he may not be able to control. But that transformation might be the only thing that can stop a powerful new villain no one can even see.” The film’s impressive cast includes Jon Bernthal, Liza Colón-Zayas, Tramell Tillman, Marvin Jones III, and Mark Ruffalo, all making their Spider-Man debuts.
So many questions remain unanswered heading into this one. Will anyone ever remember who Peter Parker is? Who are the mysterious hooded figures lurking throughout the trailer? And why exactly is Spider-Man suddenly firing organic webs? Could it be Mephisto, Morlun, or the long-theorised secret villain The Jackal pulling the strings? Whatever the answers, Cretton and company look set to deliver a blockbuster packed with action and comic-book moments fans will love. Spider-Man: Brand New Day swings into cinemas on 29 July.
