While The Odyssey continues to dominate ticket sales, a new blockbuster is only two weeks away. Spider-Man: Brand New Day, directed by Destin Daniel Cretton (Shang-Chi)) will soon be with us. Sony has released a final trailer for this sequel to 2021’s No Way Home, which is meant to kick off a new trilogy starring Tom Holland as the web-slinger.
No Way Home left things in a dark place, with Peter Parker (Holland) asking Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) to wipe him from everyone’s memory, including his girlfriend MJ (Zendaya), in order to protect the multiverse. The official synopsis describes Peter now fighting crime in a world that no longer remembers him. He is now watching from the outside as his old friends move forward without him. That isolation triggers a shift in Peter that may prove hard to rein in. Yet it could also be exactly what’s needed to face a dangerous new enemy, one nobody can actually see. Though the world has forgotten him, Peter hasn’t forgotten anyone.
Holland returns alongside Zendaya as MJ and Jacob Batalon as Ned Leeds. The cast also includes Jon Bernthal as Frank Castle/Punisher, Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner/Hulk, Michael Mando as Mac Gargan/Scorpion (previously captured in Homecoming), Marvin Jones III as Tombstone, Charlie Cox returning briefly as Matt Murdock/Daredevil, Liza Colón-Zayas as detective Jean DeWolff, Eman Esfandi as MJ’s new love interest, and Trammell Tillman as Bill Metzger from the Department of Damage Control, tasked with monitoring superpowered people.
Sadie Sink joins the cast in a role that hasn’t been officially revealed, though speculation points to her as the film’s central villain. Zabryna Guevara returns as Sheila Rivera from Daredevil: Born Again, and there’s a possibility Florence Pugh’s Yelena and comic characters like Boomerang, Tarantula, and Ramrod could show up too, because apparently a straightforward superhero story is no longer an option.
This last trailer traces how Peter arrived at this point, revisiting key beats from the earlier trilogy, including his emotional goodbye to MJ, where he promises he’ll find her again. When he eventually does track her down at the diner where she now works, his courage fails him. He settles for ordering coffee instead.
The trailer’s back half ramps up the action, teasing Banner’s transformation into Hulk, a fight against Hand operatives, and another brief look at a mysterious hooded figure. Mando’s Scorpion appears too, though he may not be the genuine article, since the film’s new threat is apparently able to mimic anyone’s appearance. There’s also a satisfying shot of Spider-Man swinging through the city with MJ in his arms once again, after she decides to heed his warning that she’s in danger. And Ned’s new spider-tracking app adds a nice touch.
