Do androids dream of electric sheep? Do you dream of Blade Runner 2099? We certainly do. We’ve dreamed of it ever since Amazon’s TV take on Ridley Scott’s sci-fi world was announced back in 2022. Now, finally, that dream is close to reality.
At Amazon’s Hall H SDCC presentation today, showrunner Silka Luisa (Shining Girls) took the stage. She was joined by series leads Michelle Yeoh and Hunter Schafer. Together they teased the bold sci-fi sequel series. They also revealed the first trailer, landing on Prime Video this November. Check it out below.
Jaw-slackening, Syd Mead-inspired visuals. Bass so heavy it feels like it might swallow you whole. Towering holograms, rusted skylines, neon-noir existentialism. It’s all wrapped around a mystery involving a runaway who might hold the answers to everything. Yeah, we’re thinking Blade Runner is back.
The show is set long after Ridley Scott’s 1982 original and Denis Villeneuve’s 2017 sequel, Blade Runner 2049. Luisa’s series is the franchise’s first small-screen entry. It looks to be painted on just as grand a canvas as its cinematic predecessors. In this world, replicants have long since taken humanity’s place atop the social order.
The story returns to Los Angeles. It follows an ageing replicant, Olwen (Yeoh), as she reluctantly teams up with Cora (Schafer), a human fleeing Blade Runners. Where their partnership leads is anyone’s guess. But it looks like a hell of a journey.
The cast also includes Dimitri Abold, Matthew Needham, Daniel Rigby, and Lewis Gribben. According to the official setup, the story picks up fifty years after Blade Runner 2049. Los Angeles has been rebuilt, but not by human hands. Cora is a fugitive looking for one last way out, and she takes on the identity of a Blade Runner herself. She’s forced to team up with Olwen, a replicant with only days left to live. Together they hunt a runaway who’s hiding a secret that could bring their fragile city down.
Questions about humanity, artificial intelligence, and our place in a digital world feel more urgent than ever right now. Silka Luisa’s entry into the Blade Runner universe arrives at a fitting moment. We’ll find out how Blade Runner 2099 rises to meet it, and how it ties into the franchise’s canon, when it debuts on Prime Video on 25 November.
