How The Grinch Stole Christmas 2: What We Know So Far

the grinch film still

We have news. There’s a sequel coming. Not a prequel, not a requel, a real sequel. It’s a follow-up to the 2000 movie about the Whos and the Grinch. As THR reports, How The Grinch Stole Christmas 2 is happening. Ron Howard is coming back. Jim Carrey is too, at least if talks go through. Universal and Imagine Entertainment have already found writers, three of them, in fact.

Sorry, we got a bit too Seussical there. But yes, it’s true. Ron Howard’s iconic How The Grinch Stole Christmas is getting a sequel 25 years later. Both Howard and original star Carrey are in talks to return. Carrey famously spent up to eight hours a day in make-up during a gruelling 24-month shoot. Howard’s producing partner Brian Grazer is also expected to return. As for those three writers, the trio behind Curb Your Enthusiasm, Alec Berg, Jeff Schaffer, and David Mandel, are working on the script. They previously wrote the Mike Myers Seuss adaptation The Cat In The Hat. The new film doesn’t have a title yet.

We don’t know what this sequel will look like. The Grinch has already stolen Christmas, given it back, and found redemption. Even Seuss’ own follow-up, How The Grinch Lost Christmas, wasn’t exactly a classic. We also don’t know if Cindy Lou Who or other characters will return. What we do know is that the original remains a beloved holiday staple. The Illumination animated version with Benedict Cumberbatch only reminded us how great Carrey was. We have no idea how this sequel will work. But we’re very curious to find out. As the Grinch himself once said, saving Christmas is a lousy ending, way too commercial. So watch this space.
